Molecular Microbiology Laboratory

Our laboratory focuses on the molecular diagnosis of pathogenic microorganisms responsible for a variety of infectious diseases. Molecular detection systems involve extraction of DNA or RNA from clinical specimens and amplification of low levels of microbial nucleic acid for accurate and sensitive diagnosis which routine microbiological tests may not detect. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is a commonly used method which can give qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of the causative agent. Being highly sensitive and specific, RT-PCR detection allows for a rapid diagnosis and hence gives an early treatment advantage.

Molecular diagnostics tests performed in our laboratory include;

  • Viral respiratory tract pathogens panel (21 pathogens)
  • SARS-CoV-2/Influenza A PCR
  • SARS-CoV-2/Influenza A/RSV PCR
  • Bacterial respiratory tract pathogens
  • PCR screen for bacterial and viral meningitis
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) PCR panel
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping
  • M. tuberculosis complex PCR
  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA quantitative PCR
  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA quantitative PCR
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) RNA quantitative PCR
  • HBV genotyping
  • HCV genotyping
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA quantitative PCR
  • Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA quantitative PCR
  • Parvovirus B 19 PCR
  • Polyoma JCV & BKV PCR
  • Toxoplasma PCR
  • Adenovirus PCR
