The new chief physician of Near East University Hospital to be Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan


Prof. Dr. Müfit C. Yenen, who has been the chief physician of Near East University Hospital for four years, handed his position over to Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan. Prof. Dr. Müfit C. Yenen, the only specialist in the field of gynecological oncology in the TRNC, will continue to carry out his duties at the Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia Hospital. Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan, who was the chief physician of Gülhane Military Medical Academy for many years, will serve as the new chief physician of Near East University Hospital.

Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan was also the chief physician of the earthquake hospital established in the region after the Gölcük and Düzce earthquakes in 1999. Prof. Dr. Balkan has made many achievements in his 42-year career. Prof. Dr. Balkan will transfer his experiences to the TRNC as Chief Physician of Near East University Hospital. At the handover ceremony that brought together the Near East Enterprises Hospitals Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Müfit C. Yenen handed over his duties to to Prof. Salih Müjdat Balkan.


At the ceremony, Near East Enterprises Board of Trustees Member and Hospitals Board Chairman Mehmet Soykurt, presented a plaque of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Müfit C. Yenen.

Making a statement at the handover ceremony held in a friendly atmosphere, Prof. Dr. Müfit C. Yenen said, “Due to the increase in the number of gynecological oncology patients in our country, I wanted to devote more time to my patients by handing over my duty as chief physician, which I have been carrying out with great pride for 4 years. I am very happy to hand it over to a great specialist like Prof. Salih Müjdat Balkan and I wish him every success.”

Prof.Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan thanked Müfit C. Yenen and teminding that Near East University Hospital has recently become one of the best hospitals in the world with the accreditation it received from the Germany-based accreditation organization TEMOS, Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan said, “We will continue to move the service quality of Near East University Hospital forward.”

Reminding that he used the words “No one will have to cross borders or cross seas for health care anymore” while opening the Near East University Hospital in 2010, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East Enterprises Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel said, “We have fulfilled our promise to provide world-class health service to the people of the island and our guests coming to our island with our state-of-the-art equipment, competent healthcare professionals and superior service quality. Emphasizing that Prof. Dr. Müfit C. Yenen successfully managed a difficult process such as the COVID-19 pandemic during his four-year term as Chief Physician of Near East University Hospital, Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel said, “I would like to thank our teacher Prof. Dr. Müfit C. Yenen for his contribution to Near East University Hospital. We appreciate the services of our teacher, an esteemed physician, to our people, and I am very happy that he will continue to serve at the Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital.”

Emphasizing that Salih Müjdat Balkan has great experience as a physician and administrator, Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel said, “We are very proud to have such a great experience, who is the chief physician of many hospitals in Turkey, in our hospital and in our country. I wish him every success in his new position.”

Who is Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan?
Born in Ankara in 1957, Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1981. Received his General Surgery specialization from Gülhane Military Medical Academy in 1989. Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan also studied at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the USA between 1991-1992 and 2004-2005. Prof. Dr. Balkan is a specialist in general surgery in the fields of breast, thyroid, parathyroid, gallbladder and biliary tract surgery, hernia surgery, kidney and liver transplantation. Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan served as the chief physician staff of Gülhane Military Medical Academy for many years and served as chief physician in many military hospitals. He also served as the chief physician of the earthquake hospital established in the region after the Gölcük and Düzce earthquakes in 1999. Between 2012 and 2023, he served as the Head of the Department of Surgery at TOBB ETÜ MEDICAL Faculty and Member of the Faculty Board of Directors. Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan assumed the position of Chief Physician of Near East University Hospital in December 2023.
