The six legged calf was born at the farm belonging to Yusuf Şanlıer at the Dikmen area of KKTC, operated successfully at the Near East University Animal Hospital. Except the normal legs of the calf, two more legs were detected in the back at the post-natal examinations, and the extra legs were removed from the body through a successful operation.

Operation lasted 4 hours…

According to a press statement released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Assist. Prof. Dr. Osman Ergene, chief physician of Animal Hospital of Near East University, said that the operation, which is a very complicated and difficult one, lasted 4 hours, and successfully completed. At the post-operation process, the calf is normally maintaining its life, and body functions such as standing up and feding reflex are successfully carried out. However, Ergene said that 48 hours after the post-operation process is considered a critical period. During this period, the calf will be kept under control and all necessary care will be taken to keep it alive.

Prof. Dr. Perran Gökçe: “We are happy to have the calf recover”.

Prof. Dr. Perran Gökçe, Lecturer of Surgery Department of the Hospital, gave technical information about the operation. Gökçe “Two additional legs settled on the back vertebrae were detected through the radiological examinations, all bony structures of the normal legs were also developed in these additional legs, however, the additional legs did not have a bony connection with the vertebrae, but presence of vascular structures and tendons connected to the neck were also observed. Besides, a soft mass tissue at ball size, which include some internal organs debris, were also observed under the aforementioned additional legs. The additional legs were amputated and the mass tissue was removed.”

Gökçe, “The calf was able to stand out after half an our of the operation. There is no problem with the feding of the calf, too. However, we are feeding it with serum. At the moment, it looks very healthy. As it is a critical case because of development anomalies, we will be keeping it under observation. We have succeeded a first at the Animal Hospital, and we are happy to save the life and gain the calf to TRNC economy. “

Calf named “Lucky”…

As the calf now has a chance tol ive a healthy life after the operation through which its additional legs and have been removed through a successful operation, it was named “Lucky” by the staff of Animal Hospital.
