Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim: “Early diagnosis can provide significant protection against some types of cancer!”
“While colorectal diseases continue to be a significant health problem worldwide, developments in surgical and medical treatment methods are of great importance in terms of improving the quality of life of patients,” said Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim, President of the Turkish Cypriot Surgical Association and Head of the General Surgery Department of the Near East University Hospital, adding; “March has been accepted as Colon and Rectum Cancer Awareness Month since 2000, and activities aimed at informing and raising awareness about screening for colon and rectum cancers, which are among the cancers that can be screened, are carried out during this month. Colorectal cancers differ from other types of cancer in that they are cancers that can be prevented by removing the polyps that cause cancer before they become cancerous.” Stating that such scientific events will contribute to the development of health services by increasing the knowledge in the field of surgery as well as raising awareness in the society, Prof. Dr. Besim said, “I would like to thank those who attended and supported our symposium, as well as the Near East University authorities for their hosting and support in the organization. We will continue to organize similar events in the coming months.”
Prof. Dr. Besim, who also provided information about the establishment and activities of the Cyprus Turkish Surgical Association in his speech, said, “Our association started to work actively in 2018. We have organized many practical and academic events with the support of our colleagues in Turkey. We also ensured the participation of our colleagues from the south of Cyprus in workshops and symposiums. We have discussed issues such as thyroid cancer, stomach cancer, obesity and trauma with relevant stakeholders.”
