Ayşe Aldemir, 56, who was referred to the Near East University Hospital with the diagnosis of brain tumor from the health center where she was diagnosed with a head trauma due to fall and brain tumor, undergone to brain surgery and the tumor, which was found to be very close to the visual nerve and other sensitive anatomical structures in the brain, was successfully removed. It was reported that the patient was restored to his former health after taking the microsurgical operation at the Department of Neurosurgery.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar; “The tumor was in a risky area that even the simplest mistake made during the operation could cause the patient to lose his basic functions such as vision, speech, reasoning, thinking and movement.
Near East University Hospital Head of Brain and Nerve Surgery Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar stated that the tumor, which was found to be 3.5 cm in size after detailed examinations, was in a position very close to the visual nerve, important sensitive structures and other vital nerves in the brain.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gürkanlar stating that the Near East University Hospital previously performed successful operations for much larger brain tumors, said Ayşe Aldemir’s 3.5-cm tumor was diagnosed to be benign and if not removed by surgery, it would further enlarge and basic skills of the patient such as seeing, speaking, reasoning would be under risk and thus, they decided to operate the tumor.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar; “Brain tumor operations are operations that require specialist experience, technological equipment and extreme precision.”
The operation that lasted four hours was performed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar, Exp. Dr. Hüsnü Koşucu, Specialist of the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Dr. Nesrin Kayışoğlu and 5-person operating room team with the microsurgical method, and the patient was reported to fully recover without any loss of basic brain function. In the post-operative explanations, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar pointing out that even the smallest mistake to be made may cause a permanent loss in the basic brain functions of the patient such as vision, speech, and movement. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gürkanlar said “The special microscopes used in the micro-surgical method provide a 3-dimensional detailed image that allows the surgery to be performed with fewer complications, separating the healthy tissues from the tumor tissues and allowing the surgeon to make healthier decisions about which tissue should be taken out. Despite the use of advanced technology, in brain surgery, which requires extensive knowledge, skills, and experience, possible wrong and inadequate interventions may result in negative conditions such as paralysis, coma or inability to survive. The success rates of our department are above world standards. We attribute this to our expert staff and high technological infrastructure.”
Today, with the development of technology, the success of operations has increased further, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar reported that the recovery of patients was faster after the operations performed with this method.
